Municipal MBBR Projects

What to expect when applying MBBR to municipal wastewater treatment.

Municipal MBBR projects range from small community plants serving a few hundred people to large urban upgrades treating over 100,000 m³/d. The technology is chosen when space is limited, when nitrification must be added to an existing plant, or when population growth has outpaced the capacity of the original treatment works.

Typical project challenges

  • Tightened ammonia or total-nitrogen limits requiring nitrification or denitrification capacity that the existing plant cannot deliver.
  • Population growth exceeding original design capacity without available land for expansion.
  • Cold-climate nitrification requiring a robust biofilm process that does not wash out at low temperatures.
  • Aging infrastructure where retrofit into existing tanks is preferable to new-build construction.
  • Decentralized or package-plant applications for small communities with limited operator availability.

What results to expect

Well-designed municipal MBBR systems reliably achieve effluent BOD below 10 mg/L, ammonia below 1–2 mg/L (in warm conditions) and total nitrogen below 10–15 mg/L with pre-denitrification. Phosphorus removal to below 0.5–1 mg/L TP is achievable with chemical precipitation. These figures are indicative — actual performance depends on the specific design, wastewater characteristics and temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MBBR proven for municipal wastewater?
Yes. Thousands of municipal MBBR and IFAS installations operate worldwide, from Scandinavia (where the technology was developed) to the Middle East, Asia and the Americas. It is one of the most widely applied biofilm technologies in municipal treatment.
Can MBBR be added to our existing plant?
In most cases, yes. Retrofit into existing aeration tanks is one of the most common MBBR applications. The feasibility depends on tank geometry, aeration capacity and the treatment target — an engineering assessment can confirm this quickly.
How does MBBR compare to MBR for municipal use?
MBBR + clarifier is simpler and cheaper to operate than MBR, but MBR produces higher effluent quality (no TSS, pathogen barrier). The choice depends on the permit requirements and whether the additional quality justifies the higher cost.
