The Technology

What is a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor?

An MBBR treats wastewater with a biofilm that grows on thousands of small plastic carriers kept in suspension inside an aerated tank. The carriers move freely with the water and air, giving a large protected surface for micro-organisms to break down pollutants — without the sludge recirculation of conventional activated sludge. The result is a compact, robust process that tolerates load variation and is straightforward to retrofit into existing tanks.

  • 02Aeration transfers oxygen and keeps the carriers moving.
  • 03No sludge return loop — compact footprint, resilient to shock loads.
  • 04Stages can be combined for COD, nitrification and nitrogen removal.
