MBBR Design & Engineering
Complete engineering knowledge base for MBBR system design — from sizing methodology and loading rate calculations to aeration design and process configuration.
Designing a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor is fundamentally different from designing a suspended-growth (activated sludge) plant. In an MBBR the active biomass lives as a biofilm on mobile carriers, so the reactor is sized around the available protected surface area and the surface-area loading rate the biofilm can sustain — not around sludge age or mixed-liquor concentration. Getting this right means working through a chain of interdependent parameters, where each choice constrains the next.
The starting point is always the influent characterisation — flow, COD/BOD, ammonia, temperature and the target effluent quality. From the load and the achievable surface-area loading rate you derive the required carrier surface area, and from the carrier's protected area per cubic metre and a practical fill ratio you arrive at the reactor volume. That volume is then checked against hydraulic retention time, against the oxygen demandthe biology creates, and against the aeration capacity needed both to transfer that oxygen and to keep the carriers fully mixed. Nitrification, denitrification and carbon removal each impose different loading limits, which is why the treatment objective drives the whole calculation.
The pages below walk through each of these design parameters individually — what it means, how it is determined, and how it interacts with the others. They are written to explain the methodology and the engineering trade-offs rather than to substitute for a project-specific design. Every real MBBR still requires site-specific data and verification; for that, the R+F engineering assessment turns these principles into a concrete preliminary configuration.
